Loblaw Selects Rodan Energy for Demand Response Services
:: January-13-2010 ::
Mississauga, ON, Canada, January 13, 2010 – Continuing to build on its commitment to respect the environment, as laid out in its 2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, Loblaw Companies Limited (Loblaw) has joined the Ontario Power Authority's DR3 program by selecting Rodan Energy to provide Demand Response services. The DR3 program encourages users of electricity to reduce electricity consumption at times when the system capacity is reaching its limits and during periods when wholesale electricity prices are very high. Reducing use during periods of high demand alleviates strain on the grid and increases system reliability.
“Demand response lowers the cost of electricity prices and reduces emissions from power plants,” stated Paul Grod, CEO Rodan Energy. “We are pleased to be working with a company like Loblaw that continues to embrace innovation in the use of electricity by participating in a variety of Green Energy initiatives such as the DR3 program, and energy efficiency and renewable power projects.”
EnerShift demand response programs are designed to provide large energy users the opportunity to secure Ontario's electricity supply and reduce their environmental footprint. For Loblaw this will mean reducing power usage when provincial electricity demand forecast approaches supply capacity. To accommodate this reduction, it will temporarily reduce electricity consumption for non-essential activities such as lighting and cooling.
“Loblaw is pleased to partner with Rodan Energy to expand our automatic electricity demand response program to include our corporate and participating franchise stores in Ontario,” said Mark Schembri, Vice President, Store Maintenance, Loblaw Companies Limited. “As a result of participating in this program the reliability of the electricity system and the environmental impact resulting from the reduced energy consumed at our stores in Ontario will be improved.”
