Programs & Project Types

Allow us to maximize your revenue opportunities. Our Energy Manager will assess your capabilities and enroll you in the program that best suits your operating parameters.

It’s easy. Rodan takes care of all aspects of program participation for the customer, including DR assessments, engineering, dispatch notifications, metering, data management, settlement, risk management and verification plans and certificates.

Current Programs:
Under contract with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), Rodan has launched a suite of demand response programs geared toward large energy consumers in Ontario to reduce strain on the power grid.

DR3 - Most Lucrative

Participants make themselves available during scheduled hours for potential notices to reduce load. DR 3 is a firm peak-load shedding program. Energy reduction is during periods throughout the year when there is high demand and high prices.

Program Details:

  • Business days only 12noon to 9pm summer and 4pm to 9pm other seasons; or 12noon to 6pm all year

  • Dispatched 100 or 200 hours per year, in 4 hour increments

  • Contracts - 1, 3 or 5 year terms

  • Payments are provided for availability (standby) and for utilization (each time you are dispatched)

DR2 - Shift Production

This program targets large industrial customers across Ontario that are able to consistently commit to shifting production (i.e. shift their electricity use) from peak periods when the provincial system needs to reduce electricity use.

Program Details:

  • Required to curtail load a minimum of 4 consecutive hours, up to a maximum of 12 hours, each business day, during the period 8am to 8pm (On-Peak Period)

  • Curtailed load must be shifted into the Off-Peak Period

  • Participation in summer, summer/winter, or all year long

  • 1, 3, or 5 year contract terms

  • Minimum project size 100kW

DR1 - Voluntary Program

Participants receive compensation for reducing the electricity demand of their facility. Projects can be based on load interruption, load shifting or behind the meter generation.

Program Details:

  • No maximum on the number of hours of operation. Load reduction is voluntary.

  • Minimum of 0.5 MW load reduction, achievable for at east one hour in a relevant season.

  • No financial penalties for under or over performance.

  • Participants offer their own ‘strike price’ on a monthly basis, at which they are willing to reduce load. The Participant’s strike price must be higher than the minimum defined Floor Strike Price for the month.

  • Participants receive monthly payments for reducing their electricity demand.

Rodan Energy has been exclusively contracted by the Ontario Power Authority to engage energy consumers to participate in the York Region DR Program.

Program Details:

  • Focus on customers with the ability to reduce more than 50kW of demand for a maximum of 6 hours on business days between the periods of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m within 1.5 hours of receiving notification from Rodan Energy.

  • Participants can be called up to a maximum of 125 hours during both the periods of May 1 to September 30 and October 1 to April 30.

  • Simply by being on call you will receive a generous standby payment and for each time you are asked to reduce your power consumption you will receive a utilization payment.

Common Project Types

Load Shifting - defer operational process to an off-peak period

Load Interruption - a reduction in ambient load, such as lighting and air-conditioning.

Behind-the-Meter Generation - employ on-site generators to reduce the power consumed from the system

Typical Demand Response Loads

Ideal loads for demand response stem from equipment that is permanently in use regardless of the season such as:

  • Lighting (ambient, decor or task)
  • Dehumidification Equipment -Elevators -Air Handling Intake Fans
  • Process Equipment -Office Equipment
  • Equipment with Storage Capability
  • Shifting Manufacturing Process -Mechanical Loads (e.g. pumps, exhaust fans etc.) -Refrigeration -Anything that can be turned off or cycled off
