The stability of Ontario’s power supply is a critical component of the future economic growth in the province. To secure system reliability, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is aggressively promoting conservation and demand management as a integral proportion of Ontario’s supply mix by 2025. Demand Response programs are a fundamental part of this initiative.
The York Region Demand Response Program has been specifically designed to address reliability concerns in the area. York Region is one of the fastest growing areas in Ontario. In the period between 2000 and 2004, the region experienced a population growth of over 17%, which also resulted in significant growth in the commercial sector.
This rapid growth in the region has outpaced the capability of the electricity supply infrastructure. The OPA has identified the communities served by the Armitage Transformer Station as being among the most urgent areas of need, suggesting that the planning limits for the transformers at Armitage have already been exceeded.
